Most homes have single phase 230V supplies meaning the maximum power of chargers suitable are 7kw/32amps. Chargers are supplied by a 6mm cable wired directly from your fusebox/ consumer unit and must be on their own dedicated circuit. Depending on the condition and capacity of your fusebox/consumer unit an additional unit may need to be installed to supply the electric vehicle circuit. A 32A charger will give 30 miles of range per hour, the size of your cars battery will determine how long it will take to charge, the industry leading Tesla Model 3 will take around 8 hours from empty.
Most homes, unless very large do not have a three phase supply. If you want to upgrade your supply to three phase it is normally by Scottish Power Energy Networks upgrading the cable from the street to your meter, but be aware costs can be excessive. Quotes for this can be generated by visiting your suppliers website and entering your details.
Suppliers now offer great EV tariffs with money saving incentives, scheduled charging enables the car to be plugged in and set to charge between pre-set times like 00:30 and 04:30 to charge when the EV tariff gives the lowest price of electricity. This requires a smart meter to be fitted by your supplier. A full electric Tesla Model 3 costs much less to run than than an equivalent petrol or diesel saloon, at around £20 to charge from empty to full with a range of 277 miles, costing only 7.4p per mile (based on 34p/kWh tariff). Fuel for a typical petrol or diesel costs around 12p per mile.
9/10 customers go for tethered - a built in lead - as it is more convenient and allows you to keep your spare lead in the boot to use when you are away from home. Some clients prefer to have untethered - socket only - as they find the coiled leads untidy when not in use, it's a matter of personal taste and what suits you.
Some chargers still require an earth rod. Most chargers now have internal PEN fault protection that removes the requirement for an earth rod. If you chose a charger requiring an earth rod a protective device that is installed beside your consumer unit that does the job of an earth rod. We do not have to dig any holes for a rod in your driveway.
Your new car doesn't need to be ready on your driveway to have a charger installed. Proof of an order form from a dealership and/or letter from your workplace if being used as a company car is enough to begin the process and installation. You must also have designated off-street parking such as driveway or an allocated space and meet other criteria detailed on the EV grant page.
Online companies will not visit your home to quote. Unfortunately the EV industry has lots of national sales companies that advertise as local EV installers who sub-contract the installation out to anyone available, at the sacrifice of quality. They request information like earth bonding pictures and want to know crucial information that unless you are an electrician, makes no sense.
We are a local company that quote and install and can visit your home to discuss the best way to do the job. If the job is simple and you would prefer a video call, we can do that too.
